VitDAL have recently published a study which examined the relationship between vitamin D and anaemia in hospitalised cats. Many studies have examined the relationship between 25(OH)D concentrations and red blood cell concentrations in human patients but this relationship has received little attention in veterinary patients. Our recent study revealed that in a cohort of hospitalised ill cats there was a positive relationship between red blood cell concentrations and serum 25(OH)D concentrations in cats. Our work provides the foundations for future studies to explore whether this relationship is simply due to the underlying disease process causing both anaemia and low vitamin D status or whether low vitamin D status may predispose to the development of anaemia.
