The VitDAL was able to help colleagues at Edinburgh Zoo recently who highlighted to us that several of the anteaters and armadillos were developing hypercalcaemia. Working collaboratively together, the team were able to diagnose marked hypervitaminosis D in a Giant Anteater and a Large Hairy Armadillo. Thankfully, the expert nutritionists at Edinburgh Zoo were able to prepare a diet with lower levels of vitamin D which resulted in the 25(OH)D concentrations declining which resulted in a decline in their clinical signs. We have reported the case summaries in a recently published paper so that other zoos can learn from our experiences, the paper can be accessed at this link
